Lead qualification calls: how to filter leads without wasting your sales team's time

Most of the leads on a list will not buy. Lead qualification is the process that separates the people worth talking to now from everyone else. Done well, your sales people stop chasing phones that nobody answers and start the day with a short list of people who want to hear from them.

What a qualified lead is

A qualified lead is one that somebody already spoke to and checked three things: that they fit (the right business or person), that they have a need, and that they are ready for the next step, such as a meeting or a quote. A lead who only left a phone number in a form is not qualified yet.

Four questions every qualification call should answer

It is not an interrogation. A good qualification call lasts one to three minutes and asks only what really changes the decision to pass the lead to a rep.

Why it stalls when people do it

Manual qualification usually fails on three things: there are not enough hours to get through the whole list, most calls are not answered, and good sales people hate doing it. The result is leads that wait for days, and by the time someone reaches them they have gone cold.

How a voice bot does the first filter

A voice bot goes through the whole list, retries the people who did not answer and asks the same questions on every call. At the end of each call it scores the lead and summarizes what was said. The team gets only the people who passed the bar.

In ENIGMA Voice Bot you write in plain words what makes a call a lead, and the bot scores every person from 1 to 5 by it. For the scoring method itself, see lead scoring from 1 to 5.

When to hand over to a rep

There are two options and both are good: a live transfer, when the lead is hot and a rep is free, or a list of qualified leads the rep calls back the same day. What matters is speed. A lead who said "yes, I am interested" should hear from a person within hours, not days.

How to know it works

Measure three numbers: how much of the list was already called, how many calls were answered, and how many of the answered calls became qualified leads. If the answer rate is low, look at your calling hours. If the conversion is low, look at the list and at the script.

Questions and answers

How long should a qualification call take?

Usually one to three minutes. The goal is to check fit and interest, not to sell.

What do you do with a lead who did not answer?

Try again at a different hour of the day. A good system lets you set in advance how many retries each lead gets.

Does a bot replace sales people?

No. It replaces the filtering stage. The sale itself, especially in larger deals, is closed by a person.

See it working on your own leads

ENIGMA Voice Bot calls the leads in your file, rates each one from 1 to 5 and keeps the recording and the transcript of every call.
